THE NIGHT SKY
Is Written Large With Mystery and Wonder

Doug Cunningham

10AM to 12 NOON Thursdays at
Bayshore Community Centre, Owen Sound

Advances in Technology have provided astronomers with views of the Universe that are simply astounding. We will go to the heart of these discoveries and frame them in the contest of what it means to be human. The common thread throughout each lecture is best portrayed by William Blake in "Augeries of Innocence" "To see the world in a grain of sand, and heaven in a wildflower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour."

November 1st Beauty and awe in the Astronomer Universe
...and I have felt a presence that disturbs me with the joy of elevated thoughts, a sense sublime, of something far more deeply interfused, whose dwelling is the light of setting suns."
- William Wordsworth - "Above Tintern Abbey"
November 8th The New Solar System
...Rovers on Mars Cassini at Saturn and Trans Plutonian Planets "Given only the ships and right sails for the heavenly space, there will also be men unafraid of the terrible distances."
- Kepler, to Galileo
November 15th Extinctions
...Playing Russian roulette with earth crossing comets and asteroids (Getting ready for Apophis in 2036) "The angels all were singing out of tune and hoarse with having littler else to do, excepting to wind up the sun and the moon, or curb a runaway star or two, or wild coat of a comet, which too soon broke out of bounds o'er the ethereal blue, splitting some planet with its beautiful tail as boats are sometimes by a wanton whale Lord Byron."
- The Vision of Judgment
November 22nd We are All Stardust
"Man is related inextricably to all reality...known and unknowable.....consider plankton, a shimmering phosphorescence in the sea, and the spinning planets and the expanding universe,... all bound together by the elastic thread of time. It is advisable to look from the tide pool to the stars and back to the tide pool again."
- John Steinbeck - "The Log from the Sea of Cortez"
November 29th The Black Taj
...Discovery of Dark Matter and Dark Energy "You know", said Post, and his voice sounded unreal, as voices are likely to do after a long pause in and utterly silent spot, "the sky here is very strange. I often have the sensation when to look up at it that it's a solid thing up there, protecting us from what's behind." kit shuddered slightly as she said "From what's behind?" "Yes" "But what is behind?" Nothing, I suppose, just darkness. Absolute night.
December 6th Are We Alone?
...Exo-planet discoveries, SETI, and Reflections on the Rise of Consciousness "The fact that this chain of life existed in the black cold of the deep sea and was utterly independent of sunlight....previously thought to be the font of all Earth's life...has startling ramifications. If life could flourish there, nurtured by a complex chemical process based on geothermal heat, then life could exist under similar conditions on planets far removed from the nurturing light of our parent star, the Sun."
- Robert Ballard - "Explorations"

TOURISM
The World At Our Door

10AM to 12 NOON Thursdays at
Bayshore Community Centre, Owen Sound

Never before has there been a more widely travelled generation than ours. It is a phenomenon which has developed in step with the technology of transportation, individual affluence and an increasingly "open" world of opportunity. Tourism has become a major global economic force, encompassing goods, services, and countless personnel involved in supporting the travel and leisure expectations of individuals. It has become an increasingly diverse and specialized industry that literally spans the globe, from "pole to pole". This series will explore the history, development, scope and future directions of this fascinating element of our modern culture.

March 6th Peter Middleton - What it is all about?
This session will provide an overview of the advent and development of tourism as a cultural pursuit. From Marco Polo’s fabled travels to China, tourism has seen a dramatic evolution to become a mainstream reality of western culture. The technological, economic and sociological changes which have enabled the rapid development of this unique industry will be considered.
March 13th Al McPherson - Canadian Tourism
This session will look at the development of the Canadian tourist trade. Beginning with the voyageur, the development of a unique Canadian identity as a nation of wilderness and awesome landscapes has been fostered and exploited by a number of travel oriented companies including the once mighty Canadian Pacific. It is a fascinating tale, that is meeting new challenges today.
March 20th TBA - Travel to the South
This session will focus on the cruise and packaged holiday trade which serves a vast number of Canadian travellers during the winter months. It has spawned the development of gigantic ships and large inclusive resorts which cater to every need. Are these the direction for the future, or simply a passing phase?
March 27th Susan Henderson - The World Beyond
This session will consider the diversity and richness of cultural tourism around the globe. Many travellers are now seeking experiences which are not only recreational holidays, but educational as well. This development has led to a fascinating diversification of travel opportunities into very specific areas of interest. This session will focus upon these "niche" markets.
April 3rd Peter Middleton - The Natural World
This session will highlight the remarkable opportunities which are centred upon appreciation of the natural world. Ecotourism and adventure travel are two distinctly different ways that travellers can engage intimately with the natural world. These forms of tourism literally span the globe from pole to pole. They are one of the most rapidly expanding, but controversial areas of modern tourist activity.
April 10th Dr. David Fennell - What are the real costs?
This final session will review the series and conclude with a consideration of the real costs of tourism in terms of its impacts upon cultures, landscapes and ecosystems. We are uniquely privileged in the travel opportunities that are available today. How those are used and developed is critical to a sustainable and ethical future for tourism in the world.
